Sustainable Textile Art: Upcycling Thrifted Pieces for ages 15-18 (In Person)

Explore the creative possibilities of sustainable fashion and textile art. Open to ages 15-18.

Course Description

Using thrifted garments and fabric scraps, experiment with upcycling techniques such as natural dyeing, embroidery, patchwork, and mending. Lean into playful transformation of materials while emphasizing environmental awareness and cultural relevance.

Customize thrifted pieces, create soft sculptures or wearable artworks, and engage in a textile swap party to exchange materials and spark new ideas. Learn about contemporary artists and designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Tanya Aguiñiga, and Christien Meindertsma, who use their craft to challenge waste and celebrate identity. / Materials fee of $12 is included in course tuition.

This class meets in person on MCAD's campus.

Required materials

Supplies for the first day

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • 1-2 pieces thrifted garments or fabric scraps. (e.g., old shirts, scarves, or fabric remnants). Natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool) are preferred for best dye results.

Optional materials

  • embroidery floss or thread (3-5 skeins in assorted colors)
  • basic sewing kit (recommended: Singer Sewing Kit, includes needles, small scissors, pins, and thimble)

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.

Class savings

Register on or before August 11 and save $25.
Register for more than one class at a time and receive $25 off each additional class (same-day registrations only).
