Policies: Continuing Education Youth and Teen Classes

Thank you for choosing to participate in MCAD Continuing Education Youth and Teen Programs! We are confident that your student will have a richly engaging experience.

The following information will be useful to you and your student as you prepare for the start of your course. Please contact us with any further questions about our classes or policies.

Youth (Ages 6–12)

Each class is led by a professional artist and is modeled to reflect a hands-on working and dynamic studio environment. Each session is designed to help students develop their creative confidence and skills through fun and challenging multidisciplinary art lessons. Students expand their art vocabulary while creating with color, line, composition, dimension, pattern, form, and texture.

Teens (Ages 12–18)

Our teen classes are designed to introduce teenage students to processes, concepts, and materials, while developing their creative expression. Meant for the motivated art student, these classes challenge teens to explore new media and further their skills in their current areas of artistic interest.

First Day of Classes

What to Wear

Due to the sometimes messy nature of studio art making activities, we recommend that students wear clothes that are appropriate for painting, building, and working with a variety of stain-making materials. It is also recommended that students wear closed-toe shoes to protect their feet during class time as well as outdoor break time.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up

For families dropping students off:

  • Street parking is available. Please pay attention to street parking restrictions.
  • Families may park in Lot C, which at the South end of the building. Lot C has a 15 minute free grace period for drop offs and pick ups.
  • For longer parking in Lot C, the public rate is $6. There is a reduced rate of $0.25 per hour available to members of the MCAD Community, including Continuing Education students. In order to take advantage of that reduced please follow these instructions. Note that there are two sets of instructions, one for new subscribers, and one for those who have set up an account previously.
  • Lot A, at the corner of 25th Street and Stevens Avenue has a limited number of free 15 minute parking spots.

For students in classes for ages 15-18, who may be driving themselves:

  • Teens must not arrive earlier than ten minutes prior to the beginning of the class and must depart or be picked up immediately upon conclusion of the class. Though MCAD does employ a full-time Campus Safety staff, your adherence to this policy helps ensure the safety of all youth.

Information and Policies

Age Requirements

Each child that is registered for a Youth and Teen course must fall into the appropriate age range, and must be the correct age by the first day of class. These ages are checked by Continuing Education staff, and will be enforced.

Attendance Policy

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. If your child will be absent for a full or partial class session for any reason, please contact our office.

Student Conduct

MCAD reserves the right to dismiss a student when their actions show disrespect for other people or property. Once a child starts the program week, tuition and fees cannot be refunded for subsequent dismissal, withdrawal, or absence.

Medication and Personal Items

If your child requires prescription medication (with the exception of an Epi-Pen), please bring it in the original container and give it directly to the instructor at check-in. Children with Epi-Pens for allergies must keep the pen on their person at all times, either in a waist pack or on a lanyard.

Students are discouraged from bringing electronic devices, toys, or any item of value, such as jewelry or money. The MCAD Continuing Education assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged personal property.

Personal Safety

MCAD employs the service of an independent firm that performs a thorough background check on all faculty, staff, and assistants we hire. These employees are also required to read and sign our rigorous policies regarding abuse. If a complaint or investigation provides knowledge or reason to believe that child abuse has occurred, MCAD will comply with Minnesota Statute 626.556, Reporting of Maltreatment of Minors. This statute states: “Any professional who has knowledge of or reasonable cause to believe a child is being physically or sexually abused shall make an oral report immediately by phone (to the appropriate state agency) to be followed as soon as possible by a report in writing.” Contact the Assistant Vice President of Continuing Education at 612.874.3778 or lara_roy@mcad.edu if you have any questions or concerns. Please see the Minors on Campus Policy for more information.
