Michael Gaughan is a Minneapolis based visual artist. Specializing in watercolor painting, but also working in performance, humor and absurdity, public art, sculpture, mixed media, and commercial illustration. He received an MFA in Painting in 2014 from the San Francisco Art Institute, a M.Ed Art Education in 2004 from the University of MN, and a BFA in Painting in 2002 from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Gaughan is currently an Adjunct professor at MCAD teaching painting & drawing for undergraduate students and professional practice for the MFA department (and currently mentoring two MFA students). he also works at Mia teaching painting classes to senior citizens through their Vitality Arts Program. He has over 20 years of teaching experience and over 23 years experience as an exhibiting visual artist, performing artist, and professional artist.

Gaughan is friendly, encouraging, supportive and knowledgeable. He has taught kindergarten, grammar school, middle school, high school, college, adult continuing ed, and senior citizens. He has worked with 1,000’s of artists. His philosophy is to find out where the student is coming from, what their goals are, and what they need from him to support them. He thinks of it as a collaborative endeavor. Gaughan loves all different kinds of art and it is easy for him to find things to be excited about in other people’s art and to genuinely celebrate his students’ work while also being dedicated to pushing his students to be the best artists they can be.
