Woodblock Printing (In Person)

Explore the rich history and contemporary applications of woodcut printing.

Course Description

Complete three projects that focus on relief printing methods, such as image development, carving, and printing by hand and press. The course begins with a single-color woodcut, allowing students to develop their own carving style and approach to mark-making. Multi-color methods include reductive and multi-block printing. Learn safe and effective use of MCAD’s printing equipment. / Materials fee of $14 and a facilities fee of $69 are included in course tuition. / Please review the Printshop Facility Fees Supply List for more information.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This course meets in person on MCAD's campus. Students do not have access to the Printshop outside of class hours, unless Printmaking Studio Access Pass is purchased.

Printmaking Studio Access Pass is $80 for Saturdays November 1 and 8, 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. More details about purchasing the pass will be sent in the registration confirmation email.

Required materials

Supplies for first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • permanent marker
  • x-acto knife
  • 6b pencil
  • latex or rubber gloves

The material and facility fees for this class will cover the basic supplies to get started. Carving tools will be available in the first class to use. Students will be required to purchase their own carving tools after the first class. Additional supplies will be discussed at the first class meeting.

Additional supplies

  • carving tools (Power Grip or Flexcut)
  • shina wood blocks
  • paper

Students should expect to spend up to approximately $100-$150 on supplies in addition to tuition. The cost of supplies will depend on the scope of the students' projects and what supplies the students currently have.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity. An apron may be useful. Closed-toe shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back.
