Bookmaking Workshop: Coptic Stitch Binding (In Person) | Minneapolis College of Art and Design

Bookmaking Workshop: Coptic Stitch Binding (In Person)

Learn the fundamentals of coptic binding, an ancient and versatile bookbinding technique originating from Egypt. Open to students 16 and above.

Course description

In this method, folded sections of paper are sewn directly onto the book’s covers using a distinctive chain-like stitch, creating an exposed spine that highlights the craftsmanship of the binding. Coptic stitch binding is a beginner-friendly and functional technique, ideal for sketchbooks and journals because it allows the book to lie completely flat when open. In this hands-on workshop explore a brief history of the technique, engage in discussion with fellow participants, and observe step-by-step demonstrations to create a handmade book. / Materials fee of $35 included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.
