What can Water - with their phase changes, iterative nature, and fractal patterns - teach us about movement and Movement?Dreams of Melting Ice started as a playful way to encourage myself to rest as an organizer living in one of the neighborhoods most impacted by Operation Metro Surge. To prevent burnout, in February 2026 I began a daily practice of making cyanotypes of ice and snow melting while I napped or rested. The long exposure time needed in the winter sun encouraged me to trust my body’s actual need for rest, rather than setting an alarm. Whenever I felt rested, the cyanotypes were finished. I found that Water was speaking through these images, which capture Water’s natural movement as they transition from a solid to a liquid state and disperse the cyanotype chemicals through the fabric. Most of our bodies and our entire planet are made of this life-nurturing teacher, who cycles through us across space, time and species. The same water in our bodies and lakes and rivers now made up the bodies of all of our ancestors, and will be in all of our descendants. Water defies the arbitrary borders of our nation-states and facilitates communication for aglobal network of life.In the face of rising fascism, escalating wars, and policies that threaten life on the planet, how might Water guide our rebellion? Part fluid dynamics investigation, part ritual performance, Dreams of Melting Ice is an invitation to give way to the healingwisdom of our individual and collective water-bodies.Website: rivshapiro.comInstagram: kohenet.riv Published on April 30, 2026
