Love Letter to the Land

How does falling in love with a place start? Already it's a little different than falling in love with a person, and not. Falling in love with a person, some things become blurry. They become my focal point, changing how I take in the rest of the world. Falling in love with a place, my arms won't stretch wide enough for the embrace. It's something much greater and much smaller than myself. How can I find the focal point? It’s swallowing me up. Dominating my senses, overpowering my emotions. Triggering within and without. It’s my experience now and all of history piled up. Stones set one on top of the other until they are the stage from which I perform today.

How could I possibly hold it? Too big to fit in a feeble human heart. Where does the love go, the bit I hold and the pinch I release? Where do I put it when distance grows? Can I send love letters to the land, the sea, the tiny tendrils of ivy winding up the stone? Certainly the pining is one-sided. The sea can do without me. Is the reverse true? When I am away from that infinite horizon, crashing in and out endlessly, will it call to me? One day, not far from now, will I long for a breath of Irish air? Watery enough to bathe my face in tears, filling my lungs with healing breaths. And the green. Beautiful green in the arms of the trees, spindly little creatures creeping all around. The line where the sky’s lips meet the face of the sea.

All this, and my soul still longs for home.
