Leading Creatives, Leading Creatively

Steven Hauge

In MCAD’s Creative Leadership program, we explore the many dimensions of leadership—how it shows up in systems, in teams, and in individuals. Recently, contributor Steven Hauge invited our students to reflect on the unique role of the Art Director, a position that beautifully illustrates the tension between leading creatives and leading creatively.

When leading a creative team, the Art Director steps into the role of coach, advocate, mentor, and taskmaster. Here, leadership is relational: it’s about cultivating trust, protecting space for ideas, and guiding individuals toward growth. Leading creatives requires patience and advocacy—it means tending to the human dynamics of a team while holding them accountable to the work.

On the other hand, the Art Director must also lead creatively serving stakeholders by ensuring projects are on time, on budget, and on target. This requires vision, discernment, and the ability to bring clarity from complexity. To lead creatively is to balance imagination with discipline, crafting solutions that honor the needs of clients and communities while staying true to the integrity of the process.

Steven reminded students that the Art Director’s power lies not in control but in service—standing at the center of two circles of responsibility. By prioritizing the needs of both team and stakeholders, they unify efforts around a shared vision. This dual lens is what makes the role so delicate, and so impactful.

The lesson extends beyond art direction. Every leader faces moments where they must hold both dynamics: the care of leading people and the courage of leading with creativity. The two are not the same, but when woven together, they create the conditions for trust, alignment, and transformation.
