Shaun ‘Spanky’ Piela Releases Indie Comic “Cosplayer Versus Shark”

A nearly three-decade journey has come full circle for Shaun “Spanky” Piela ’98, whose newly published comic Cosplayer Versus Shark is making waves among indie horror fans.

The comic, co-created with writer Pat Jankiewicz, began as an idea during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the pair bonded over a shared love of comics, horror films, and, of course, sharks. After several years of development, the project has now found a home with Antarctic Press, where it is available for purchase through the publisher’s website.

Blending campy thrills with sharp visual storytelling, Cosplayer Versus Shark taps into cult genre appeal while showcasing the kind of artistic experimentation Piela first explored as a student at MCAD. He credits his time at the college as “some of the most memorable, most inspiring, most wonderful years” of his life, where mentors and peers helped refine his creative voice.

“I feel the shark book is bringing me home,” Piela shared.
