Kevin Byrne’s Minneapolis Map Earns Spot in "The Quarantine Atlas"

A map created by Professor Emeritus J. Kevin Byrne has been featured in The Quarantine Atlas: Mapping Global Life Under COVID-19, a new book from Bloomberg CityLab and Chronicle Books.

Byrne’s contribution, titled Social Change, documents the Minneapolis landscape in the wake of the 2020 murder of George Floyd, capturing the city’s social and spatial upheaval through a detailed collage of field sketches, photographs, and Minneapolis Police Department data. Using Maptitude GIS software, Byrne mapped protest sites, memorials, and police incident locations around 38th Street and Chicago Avenue — now globally recognized as the site of Floyd’s death.
