Julie Buffalohead ’95 is presenting a new body of work reimagining and contrasting themes of European folktales with Indigenous perspectives in a solo exhibition titled Stories of Becoming.

A citizen of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, Buffalohead is known for her richly layered visual narratives that center Indigenous storytelling traditions. In Stories of Becoming, Buffalohead incorporates animals and symbolic figures drawn from Indigenous stories, alongside references to contemporary femininity and youth. Her work reflects a “rematriated” approach to storytelling that recenters values of care, community, and connection while addressing histories of resilience and cultural continuity.

The exhibition also highlights Buffalohead’s ability to balance grounded, place-based imagery with moments of humor and visual complexity, inviting viewers to reconsider the narratives passed down through generations and the lessons they carry.
