Betni Kalk Ogochukwu ’05, MFA has completed a sweeping new mural titled A Day in Eastern NE at the Children’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Center in Omaha.

Commissioned by the Mental Health Innovation Fund, the 180-foot-long, 7-foot-high installation spans six continuous courtyard walls, each with distinct angles and widths. The funder requested a nature-based design to foster a calming, restorative experience for children and families served by the center.

Ogochukwu’s mural captures the rhythm of a single day unfolding across Nebraska’s eastern landscape. Beginning with the soft light of dawn on the first wall, the scene transitions gradually from morning to night as viewers move along the courtyard. Native flora and pollinators appear throughout the work, alongside rainclouds, birds, dragonflies and ducks at dusk. The mural concludes with children playing among fireflies and deer silhouetted against the moon’s reflection on a quiet lake.
