PCSS 2026 Student Profile: Liam Cao

What surprised you the most about the Pre-College Summer Session?

One thing that surprised me was how welcoming of an environment PCSS was. MCAD felt like a place where you could truly be yourself. It was really easy to settle in and join a community of artists. I felt safe and invited.

What aspect of the program had the biggest impact on you?

I think the schedule and routine of it has had the biggest impact on me. I find myself being able to wake up earlier now. Early bird gets the worm. It’s also been easier for me to get into the flow state of drawing after PCSS.

I was having a bit of art block before coming to MCAD, but now I feel a lot more refreshed. I think having a set time for making art helped me get into good habits.

Another aspect of the program that has had an impact on me are the friends I made. As an extrovert that started homeschooling last year, I often found myself lonely and drained. But now I have a bunch of cool artist friends that I can hang out and share art with.

How has your artistic practice changed from being a part of the program?

I’m a bit more organized with how I approach my projects now. I plan and prep a lot more now. Instead of rushing into an animation, shot by shot. I do a quick storyboard. I’ve also started keeping a planner to keep track of everything.

I’ve also gotten more into the whole process behind making a short animated film. Creating the script, producing the music, and voicing some of the characters. I’ve come to realize how much I value storytelling in my work.

What was your favorite experience outside of the classroom?

My favorite experience outside of the classroom is definitely drinking boba with my friends. It’s a refreshing reward. I enjoyed the walk there. Going to the record store and convenience store on the way back was fun too!

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about coming to the Pre-College Summer Session at MCAD?

One piece of advice I have is to prepare what you pack. I did not whatsoever plan my packing. I kinda let my mom manage that. The bedroom gets really hot, and I did not bring a fan. I also recommend bringing some sort of entertainment. I didn’t bring any games and I wish I did.

Another thing I recommend doing is going to the activities. I wish I attended more of them. I missed out on making bracelets and zine night. Studio hours are important, but so is friendship!
