A New Canon: The Color Theorists, Mary Gartside and Emily Noyes Vanderpoel

A brief overview of the work of Mary Gartside, who lived in England from 1755-1819, and Emily Noyes Vanderpoel, who lived in the United States from 1842-1939. Each wrote treatises on color theory, and published at pivotal times in Western history. The presentation will place their work and publications within historical contexts so as to examine how their inclusion (and by extension, additional underrepresented color theorists and practitioners) may help us to understand how we may expand our contemporary understandings of color usage in all creative visual fields.
