Hend Al-Mansour

Where are you originally from and how did you hear about MCAD?

I'm originally from Saudi Arabia. I moved to Rochester, Minnesota, and from there I commuted twice weekly for some Continuing Education classes. That is how I fell in love with MCAD.

What was your undergrad degree in?

Medicine and surgery.

Why did you choose MCAD for your MFA?

Because it is a wonderful place.

How do you feel about the Twin Cities?

I love the Twin Cities very much. It is a fertile artistic place. There is a lot of good art, good opportunities, and good art activism. I love the diversity of people and cultures. I love my neighbors and my friends. I love the drama of the weather, which is very inspiring. 

What did you enjoy most about your MFA experience?

The critique sessions.

Who was your mentor and what was that relationship like?

Aribert Munzner. He is a great person and a great mentor. We still have a good relationship twenty years later.

Favorite MCAD facility?

The Help Desk. They are so smart and generous. Also, the 3D shop is a fascinating place. 

What advice do you have for current MCAD students?

Never lose believing in yourself and always follow your instinct. And enjoy!

I make art to understand the world.

How do you network yourself and your art?

I am part of several artist groups. I am a member of the Rosalux Gallery in Minneapolis, A.I.R Gallery in New York, and Lahd Gallery in London. I use several social media platforms. I apply for grants and art competitions. I participate in and organize exhibiting.  

What inspires you?

My experience as an Arab woman. My heritage of Islamic art. Feminism anywhere. Strong desire for justice.

Current obsession?

Animation! I am studying how to animate my drawings and paintings.

Why do you create art? 

It is an impulse that comes out through my body. Art is like a spirit that wants to construct itself and be seen and felt. My body welcomes and enjoys the process.
