Policies: Continuing Education Summer Youth Camps

Kid playing with a ball

Thank you for choosing to participate in MCAD Summer Youth Programs! We are confident that your student will have a richly engaging experience.

The following information will be useful to you and your student as you prepare for the start of your program. Please contact us with any further questions about our classes or policies.

Please note that some Studio Kids classes are being offered in a remote format and some of the information below will not apply.

Studio Kids Ages 6–12

Each class is led by a professional artist and is modeled to reflect a hands-on working and dynamic studio environment. Each session focuses on the exploration of images and concepts related to that week’s theme and is designed to help students develop their creative confidence and skills through fun and challenging multidisciplinary art lessons. Students expand their art vocabulary while creating with color, line, composition, dimension, pattern, form, and texture.

2022 Lead Artists:

  • Mary Henry
  • Jonathan Maki
  • Alissa McCourt
  • Jane Meyer
  • Melanie Mozingo
  • Chelsea Novotny
  • Alonzo Pantoja
  • Anne Sugnet

Covid Specific Policies and Procedures

MCAD requires, with limited exceptions, all students, faculty, and staff who work or study on campus to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please see MCAD’s Covid policies for more information. Students will be asked to submit proof of vaccination before the first class meeting. Students must complete this proof of vaccination form. If proof of vaccination is not received before the first class meeting, you will be automatically dropped from the class.

In-Person Summer Youth Program Protocols and Policies

  • All students are required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. This includes a booster dose for those who are eligible.
  • At-home monitoring for symptoms of illness by students and staff will be required.
  • Students and staff will be required to wear a high quality mask (such as an N95, KN95, or 3-ply surgical mask) indoors. This includes all individuals regardless of vaccination status.
  • Hand washing and hand sanitizer stations will be available in every space, as well as at the entrances and exits to the buildings.
  • Students who decline to follow these protocols may be asked to leave the program and will not receive a refund.
  • The most current health and safety guidelines will be adhered to. Changes to the program may be made at any time.

First Day of Classes

What to Wear

Due to the sometimes messy nature of studio art making activities, we recommend that students wear clothes that are appropriate for painting, building, and working with a variety of stain-making materials. It is also recommended that students wear closed-toe shoes to protect their feet during class time as well as outdoor break time.

What to Bring

  • High quality mask, such as an N95, KN95, or 3-ply surgical mask.
  • Packed lunch and snack: Please label. No nuts.
  • Water bottle: Please label.
  • Hand sanitizer: MCAD has hand sanitizer stations at all building entrances and within the classrooms. However, you may want to send a small bottle along with your student. Please label.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up

Please drop off and pick up your child at the south side of the Main Building, where free short-term lot parking is available, and enter through the south side doors. Escort your child to class and sign them in with an instructor every day. Children must not be dropped off earlier than 8:50 a.m. and must be picked up immediately upon conclusion of the class. Though MCAD does employ a full-time public safety staff, your adherence to this policy helps ensure the safety of all youth.

Because building access may be restricted during summer 2022, arrival and check-in procedures may be adjusted. Up to date procedures will be shared with families shortly before the start of their class.

Extended Care

Need extended care for your child during the day? The Children's Theatre Company next door offers morning and afternoon care for MCAD camp participants.

Information and Policies

Age Requirements

Each child that is registered for a camp must fall into the appropriate age range. These ages are checked by Continuing Education staff, and will be enforced. Studio Kids 6-9 year old students must be at least six years of age, and must have completed kindergarten, prior to the first day of their class.

Attendance Policy

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. If your child will be absent for a full or partial class session for any reason, please complete the Absence Reporting Form. These form will be emailed to families shortly before the start of their class.

Student Conduct

MCAD reserves the right to dismiss a student when their actions show disrespect for other people or property. Once a child starts the program week, tuition and fees cannot be refunded for subsequent dismissal, withdrawal, or absence.

Medication and Personal Items

If your child requires prescription medication (with the exception of an Epi-Pen), please bring it in the original container and give it directly to the instructor at check-in. Children with Epi-Pens for allergies must keep the pen on their person at all times, either in a waist pack or on a lanyard.

Students are discouraged from bringing electronic devices, toys, or any item of value, such as jewelry or money. The MCAD Studio Kids Program assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged personal property.

Personal Safety

MCAD employs the service of an independent firm that performs a thorough background check on all faculty, staff, and assistants we hire. These employees are also required to read and sign our rigorous policies regarding abuse. If a complaint or investigation provides knowledge or reason to believe that child abuse has occurred, MCAD will comply with Minnesota Statute 626.556, Reporting of Maltreatment of Minors. This statute states: “Any professional who has knowledge of or reasonable cause to believe a child is being … physically or sexually abused shall make an oral report immediately by phone (to the appropriate state agency) to be followed as soon as possible by a report in writing.” Contact the Senior Director of continuing education at 612.874.3778 or lara_roy@mcad.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
