Filmmaking

Bring your stories to life through the art and craft of filmmaking. In this major, you’ll explore the creative process behind film and video—from developing an idea and writing a script to directing, cinematography, sound, editing, and post-production.

As a filmmaking major you will:

  • Develop a personal visual voice by exploring photography and filmmaking as a creative form of expression and communication.
  • Build technical skills in camera operation, exposure, composition, lighting, and digital image-making.
  • Learn the creative process from developing an idea and planning a shoot to making, editing, and presenting finished work.
  • Strengthen visual storytelling skills by using photography and filmmaking to communicate ideas, perspectives, and narratives.
  • Learn how to work with a team to bring your creative vision to life.

MCAD Media Arts majors with a concentration in Filmmaking have gone onto careers as art directors, camera operators, set designers, cinematographers, directors, and more.

FAQs

What kind of projects will I be doing?

Students will create a variety of projects using both still photography and filmmaking techniques. Potential projects may include taking photographs in a variety of locations and editing and curating the images in order to tell a story. Filmmaking projects will include group activities that teach the essentials of storyboarding, lighting, cinematography, and film editing

What technology will I be using?

Students will have access to state of the art photography and filmmaking equipment, including DSLR cameras, with a variety of lenses and filters, and access to MCAD’s professional studios, sweeps, and lighting setups, as well as accessories such as tripods and rigging accessories.

What software will I be using?

For editing, students will use Adobe software, including photoshop and premiere pro.

What will the final project look like?

A final project will include a suite of photographic images and a final film that will be screened at the student graduation ceremony and exhibition. While students will explore many aspects of filmmaking throughout the session, in the final project each participant will get to experience specific roles, such as director, writer, cinematographer, sound designer, or editor.

Will students need to bring any of their own equipment?

Students are discouraged from bringing personal equipment to the program. Students will all be using MCAD supplied equipment in order to create the most seamless experience and ensure that the faculty and MCAD’s technology staff can provide appropriate support.
