Portraiture in Drawing (In Person)

Examine the genre of portraiture as an introduction to multiple and varied ways to approach the portrait.

Course description

Learn how to achieve accuracy with regards to proportion, as well as a degree of "likeness," through a series of guided exercises which cover gesture, shadow-shapes, highlight-shapes, angular measurement, and skull studies. Learn the art history of portraiture and the methods artists use to capture the subject’s essence. Engage in traditional Classical methods, in addition to the use of unusual mediums such as printmaking, clay, and other materials. / Materials fee of $115 included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Please note that one of the classrooms is only accessible via stairs. If you need accommodations (i.e. are unable to navigate stairs) please contact the Continuing Education office.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required.

Supplies required for first class

  • 18 x 24” newsprint pad
  • 18 x 24” drawing paper pad
  • 6B soft charcoal pencil
  • white charcoal pencil
  • 2 boxes extra soft vine charcoal (not willow)
  • 2 pack black conte crayons (2B)
  • pen eraser
  • white eraser
  • kneaded eraser

Optional supplies

  • 18 x 24” drawing board

Students should expect to spend approximately $50 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothing appropriate for messy creativity.

Register on or before January 19 and save $25.
