Painting with Gouache 1: Learning the Medium Intensive (In Person)

Learn the basics of painting with gouache, a versatile opaque water based medium. Open to ages 16 and above.

Course description

Gouache shares characteristics of watercolor, oil and acrylic paints, is highly pigmented, reworkable and dries quickly. The course includes demonstrations of fundamental techniques of working with gouache. Learn traditional and non-traditional approaches to color theory, planar analysis, tessellation pattern, hand-painted illustration, still life, portraiture, and abstraction. Through an exploration of the medium of gouache and experimentation with a variety of styles and techniques, discover the richness of adding gouache to an artistic practice. Class time is spent on demonstrations, lectures, studio time, and critique. / Materials fee of $22 is included in course tuition.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing and painting experience is helpful, but not required.

Required Materials

Supplies for the first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • one sheet of 22 x 30" watercolor paper 140lb
  • gouache paint (recommended: Holbein, Winston & Newton and Niji)
    • blue
    • red
    • yellow
    • black
    • white
    • other colors optional
  • brushes (round 4; flat 1/2" and other sizes optional)
  • one HB pencil
  • kneadable and pink pearl erasers
  • plastic pallet or disposable wax pallet pad
  • container for water
  • paper towels
  • one roll of masking tape

Students should expect to spend up to approximately $125–$200 on supplies in addition to tuition and depending on projects.
