Painting Fundamentals for Ages 12-15 (July session) (In Person)

This class provides a fun and exciting path to understanding the basic concepts, techniques, and materials used in contemporary acrylic painting. Open to ages 12 to 15.

Course description

Explore the formal elements of painting, including composition and color theory. Combine hands-on studio time with short lectures and a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to examine various painting styles and histories. Participate in group critiques and develop the ability to discuss art using common terminology. / Please note that the June and July sessions of this course are the same curriculum, choose the session that best fits your schedule. / Material fee of $5 included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 12 to 15. Students must meet the age requirement by August 1, 2026. Please review our complete Teen Policies as well as our General Policies prior to completing your registration.

Supplies for the first class

  • pen or pencil
  • sketchbook
  • 12 x 16" or larger pad of acrylic paper or canvas paper
  • graphite pencil, 2B
  • eraser
  • water cup
  • paper palettes
  • palette knife
  • acrylic paint brushes (various sizes, round and flat)
  • acrylic paint colors (at least 60 mL each)
    • Cadmium Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Phthalo Blue
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Hansa Yellow
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Burnt Umber
    • Titanium White
    • Mars Black

Students should expect to spend up to approximately $100-$125 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
