Getting Creative with AI (In Partnership with CalArts) (Online)

Course Description

In this course designed for creatives, you'll experiment with AI-driven creativity, critically evaluate its societal impacts, and explore innovative ways of integrating AI into human-centered design practices. By engaging deeply with ethical questions about authentically, bias, and digital identities, you'll gain practical insights and skills essential for roles in creative coding, UX design, AI ethics auditing, and digital storytelling.

In this course, you will explore foundational generative AI tools using Google Colab, p5.js, and Teachable Machine to create text, visuals, and sound. Emphasis will be placed on practical experimentation and understanding ethical implications. Course modules include: Introduction to Generative AI; AI-Generated Text; Visual Creativity with AI; AI and Sound Creation; Ethical Considerations in Creative AI.

This class is offered through a special partnership with CalArts.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Please review CalArts registration, withdrawal, and refund policies before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This online course is asynchronous. There are no set class meeting times. Instead, the course is project-based, with 2 to 3 deadlines per week, and students can choose a time and place that works best for them to complete the work. Course activities may include readings, video demonstrations and tutorials, online discussions, projects, and critiques.

Hardware
A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, and a way to upload work.

Class resources

This class uses Canvas, CalArts Learning Management System. The Canvas platform provides an instructor-led learning experience. These class sizes are small to facilitate discussion and engagement with your instructor and other students. You have access to recorded content from CalArts instructors and may complete the course work at your own pace with set deadlines. The instructor will have virtual office hours to answer questions and provide individualized feedback and guidance.
