Designing with Gouache: Exploring Color Theory (Online)

Develop an understanding of color theory and how colors interact and influence each other.

Course Description

Gain a deeper understanding of color mixing by executing a series of color charts and designs using limited palettes. Through practice and repetition, learn to control color harmony, relativity, value, temperature, and chroma. Throughout this course, examine the important contributions of color theorists Josef Albers, Johannes Itten, Wolfgang Von Goethe, and more.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Course meeting details

This online class is synchronous. Students will meet online using Zoom for lectures, demonstrations, class discussions, exercises, time to ask questions and share resources, and work time. The instructor will have virtual office hours for one hour before each class session to answer questions and provide individualized feedback and guidance.

Prerequisites

Drawing experience is helpful but not required.

Supplies for the first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • gouache paint:
    • Spectrum or primary yellow
    • Primary Red
    • Cadmium Orange Hue or Cadmium-Free Orange
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Spectrum Violet
    • Permanent Green Middle
    • Black
    • White
  • paper: watercolor or mixed media
  • watercolor brushes (variety of sizes, round and flat)
  • pencil (HB)
  • erasers (kneadable and/or pink pearl)
  • pallet to mix colors on (plastic or disposable wax pallets)
  • ruler
  • compass
