Explore comics, characters, and visual storytelling through hands-on drawing and design. Open to ages 9 to 12. Course descriptionDive into the process of making comic books, from storytelling and creating characters to designing the cover art. Explore drawing techniques using a variety of artist tools and materials to create cartoon facial features, as well as characters in motion. Create and print a collaborative zine, a small-scale, self-published publication. Explore an expanded definition of comic artists to include everything from Egyptian hieroglyphics, to pioneer cartoonist Will Eisner, to autobiographic graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier. Visit the Minneapolis Institute of Art for inspiration for comic characters, concepts, and visual styles. The course concludes with a "comical" showcase of artwork for friends and families to admire. Students take home a copy of the collaborative comic book.Open to students ages 9 to 12. Students must meet the age requirement by August 1, 2026.
