Collagraph Printmaking Workshop (In Person)

Explore the kinds of creations that can come from combining collage and printmaking techniques through collagraphy. Open to students 16 and above.

Course description

A variety of techniques and inexpensive materials can be used to produce complex, conceptual images using collagraphy. Create different types of printing plates, such as carving and manipulating matboard, printing from fabrics, constructing with acrylic media to create endless values and textures. Explore printing with newly created plates through relief or intaglio processes, a variety of printmaking inks and presses, mixing colors, creating layers, and printing an edition. Experiment with the collagraph plate as a surface for printing watercolor monoprints. / Students should have enough manual dexterity to cut, glue, collage, mix inks, etc. People without use of both hands may need special assistance in doing this work. / Materials fee of $29 and facilities fee of $52 included in tuition. Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This class meets in person on MCAD’s campus. This class has limited access to the Printshop. Students do not have access to the Printshop outside of class hours. Please review the Printshop guidelines in advance.

It is imperative to attend the first class meeting. Important instruction and safety procedures are covered, that are required in order to successfully participate in the class.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing and painting experience helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • x-acto knife with extra blades
  • scissors
  • assortment of brushes for water-based and oil-based work
  • 2-3 chipboard boxes (i.e. food boxes used for crackers and cereal)

Additional supplies as needed throughout the course

  • Other printmaking paper to be determined by students’ individual projects
  • Matboard / cardboard scraps & pieces
  • Fabric scraps
  • Textured paper scraps
  • Watercolor paints
  • Various acrylic media and glues

Additional supplies will be discussed at the first class meeting.

Students should expect to spend approximately $50 on supplies in addition to tuition. The amount will depend on the scope of the students' projects and what supplies the students currently have.

Recommended textbooks

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity. An apron may be useful. Closed toed shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back.
