The Art of Filmmaking: Composition and the Moving Image (In Partnership with CalArts) (Online)

In this course you will explore how the moving image is constructed in the production and post-production process.

Course Description

Topics include composition, framing, camera movement, lens and optics, depth of field, lighting, image editing and visual effects. You will produce short videos based on prompts designed to explore composition strategies for the moving image. To complete the assignments a video camera is recommended but a smartphone can be used. Access to, and a working knowledge of editing software such as Adobe Premiere is required. In addition to completing assignments, students will have the option to participate in live, instructor-led discussions and critiques. This supplemental experience allows students to engage with one another as they explore the topics of the course and share feedback.

This class is offered through a special partnership with CalArts.

Class meeting details

This online course is asynchronous. There are no set class meeting times. Instead, the course is project-based, with 2 to 3 deadlines per week, and students can choose a time and place that works best for them to complete the work. Course activities may include readings, video demonstrations and tutorials, online discussions, projects, and critiques.

Hardware
A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, and a way to upload work. If working with Adobe Creative Cloud a computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud software.

Class resources

This class uses Canvas, CalArts Learning Management System. The Canvas platform provides an instructor-led learning experience. These class sizes are small to facilitate discussion and engagement with your instructor and other students. You have access to recorded content from CalArts instructors and may complete the course work at your own pace with set deadlines. The instructor is available in live sessions to answer your questions and provide individualized feedback on assignments.
