Image Student, MFA Degree Areas of Study Illustration Social Media @eryi_wang Pronounsshe/herWhere are you from?ChinaMajor FocusIllustrationWhat inspired you to pursue your MFA at MCAD, and how has studying here shaped your artistic practice?Spontaneity has always been a guiding principle for me. However, as I grow older, I find that experiences that once excited me no longer have the same effect. To seek new experiences, I realize the need for a deeper commitment. This realization led me to choose art as a passion, providing a safe space to explore new things and express my emotions.Studying here, despite not having an art background, has allowed me to gain a brief understanding of the industry and connect with other artists. The interdisciplinary nature of the program offers a variety of options and opportunities, broadening my perspective on what can be achieved as an artist. How has living and creating in Minneapolis influenced your work compared to your home country?I didn't come from an art background, so this is all new to me. Instead of being influenced by prior experiences, I found myself creating more art once I arrived here. While this has undoubtedly impacted me, I believe it's on a subconscious level. I'd prefer to leave this question for my future self, ten years down the line, to reflect and determine what truly influenced and shaped me, rather than trying to pinpoint it now. What unique perspectives do you feel you bring to the MFA program as an international artist? As an international artist, I offer a fresh perspective to peers. My upbringing lacked certain experiences that typically shape these genres, allowing me to provide unique insights. What challenges and rewards have you found in adapting to a new cultural environment while studying art?Born and raised in China, I moved to New Zealand at 16 and spent eight years there. While Western culture isn't new to me, studying art is. Without an art background, I've had to learn the norms and language of the art world to adapt, provide meaningful feedback, and organize my creative process. The rewarding aspect has been connecting with a diverse cohort, each bringing unique backgrounds and practices. Their work has inspired me to reflect on and diversify my own, making it more inclusive and expressive. What advice would you give to other international artists considering studying at MCAD?Adapting to a new cultural environment is a gradual process that requires patience and self-compassion. It's natural to encounter challenges in understanding and processing new experiences; allow yourself the time to acclimate without frustration. Embrace your unique perspective and don't hesitate to express it within the program. Your distinct viewpoint enriches the collective learning experience and fosters a more inclusive environment.
