What surprised you the most about the Pre-College Summer Session?

What surprised me the most was how interesting art history was! I really enjoyed how each class I got to learn about many paintings from different time periods, learn the history of animation, and overall got to learn a lot of amazing history in such a short time!

What aspect of the program had the biggest impact on you?

The painting class had the biggest impact on me because it really helped me strengthen my technical painting abilities! It was great to go over mixing color temperature, going over proportion measuring techniques, and composition choices. Along with that we also got to discuss and learn about different artists and their own creative styles.

How has your artistic practice changed from being a part of the program?

The program taught me a lot more technical abilities! As a self-taught artist it was really useful to learn techniques that helped me enhance my work. I feel that after the program I have been spending more time applying the methods I was taught in class to my actual works.

What was your favorite experience outside of the classroom?

I feel like my favorite experience outside of the classroom was being able to walk around the neighborhood and getting to see a little bit of the Twin Cities. There were a lot of great shops and restaurants that me and my classmates liked to go to in our free time! There is a lot of free time on the weekends to go explore all the amazing things to do in the neighborhood and make long lasting memories.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about coming to the Pre-College Summer Session at MCAD?

Make sure to get your work done and be diligent with your time! But also set aside time to hang out and do activities with friends. I would also say to not be worried if you are not a super fast worker because everyone works at their own pace and that's ok!
