What surprised you the most about the Pre-College Summer Session?

The amount of freedom we all had. There was way more choice in activities and where we could go than any kind of school or summer camp I’ve been to. As long as we were safe, we could pretty much do as we pleased. We were treated like grown adults that just needed some guidance.

What aspect of the program had the biggest impact on you?

The overwhelming sense of community. Even if we had different majors, it felt like we were all in the same boat together. I didn’t feel like I was surrounded by strangers like at an ordinary school; I felt surrounded by possible friends. I actually felt like a part of something rather than an observer.

How has your artistic practice changed from being a part of the program?

Not everything needs to be perfect. I’ve struggled with perfectionism in my art for years and being part of a very fast-paced program taught me that not everything has to look like it should belong in a museum. Sometimes it just needs to exist first.

What was your favorite experience outside of the classroom?

Probably the optional community activities after study hours! I made a lot of friends through that and generally just had fun.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about coming to the Pre-College Summer Session at MCAD?

Give it your best. If your best that particular day isn’t your usual best, that’s okay! There’s always tomorrow. It can be a lot so just make sure to take care of yourself. Also, don’t try to start drama. It’s not high school; there’s no popularity contest to win, and it just makes you the mean person in a tight-knit community.
