September 27, 2023 Image We are saddened to learn that esteemed Professor Emeritus Peter Seitz died this past weekend. His inspirational guidance and disciplined approach to design shaped so many students and faculty at MCAD. Peter taught at MCAD from 1971-2002, including serving as the chair of the Design Department in the 90’s. He was appointed Professor Emeritus in 1992 and continued to teach into the early 2000’s. According to designer and entrepreneur Monica Little ‘79, “Peter was by far my toughest teacher. And he was my most supportive teacher, assuring Debra Cohen ‘78 and me that we did indeed have what it took to launch a design firm a year after graduating from MCAD.” Author and design historian Kolean Pitner co-wrote a book with Peter called Peter Seitz: Designing a Life. She stated, ‘Working with Peter on that book was one of the highlights of my career. He was the founding father of Minnesota graphic design. A true pioneer!” While Peter will be missed terribly by all who were influenced by his teaching and mentorship, we will be forever grateful for his decades-long care for the MCAD community and his lasting legacy established through the Peter Seitz Scholarship Fund.
