The idea of turning this passion into a profession and refining my skills drove me to pursue photography seriously. I wanted to take my hobby to the next level, gain a deeper understanding of the craft, and grow as an artist. This passion led me to MCAD, where I could develop my creative voice and build a future doing what I love.Describe the work you submitted for merits. The work I submitted for Merits is rich in visual rhythm, vibrant colors, and dynamic energy. Each piece reflects my heritage and passion, showcasing the dedication I pour into every project. Through these works, I’ve grown as an artist, constantly refining my vision and technique. Every submission is not just a finished piece but a step in my artistic journey, pushing me to explore, create, and evolve. Why did you decide to come to MCAD?The first thing I googled when I moved to Minneapolis was "art schools in Minneapolis," and MCAD was the first to come up. From that moment, I knew I belonged here. What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make? This summer, I’m planning to go back home to Mexico, and I’m excited about the possibility of creating more art while I’m there. I’m looking forward to capturing and sharing more photos that reflect my roots and heritage.Favorite thing about college life (so far)?My favorite thing about college life so far is the freedom to experiment with my projects. Having access to a wide variety of resources as a student allows me to explore different techniques and ideas. I also love the flexibility in assignments, which gives me the space to develop my own creative voice. What inspires you?I find inspiration everywhere, from personal experiences to music videos and the work of photographers like Nick Knight and Felipe Romero. I also love exploring artist photo books, which give me new perspectives and ideas. Most importantly, connecting with people and hearing their stories fuels my creativity and pushes my work forward. Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it!One of my favorite pieces is a project I’m currently working on for my Photo Seminar class, titled The Creative Face of Latin Culture in Maps. In this project, I’m photographing different Latinx artists in the Twin Cities, capturing their essence through portraiture. The final presentation will be an installation of prints, incorporating various materials like silk fabric. It’s an exciting project because it allows me to connect with my community while experimenting with new ways of displaying photography.Anything you're obsessed with at the moment?Lately, I’ve been really excited about bringing my artwork into the real world—printing larger pieces and finding spaces to share them with others. There’s something special about seeing my work exist physically rather than just digitally. I’ve been really enjoying the process of printing, experimenting with materials, and thinking about how my pieces interact with a space. It’s something I’m eager to keep exploring! Oh, and I’ve also been a little obsessed with apples lately. If your artwork had a soundtrack, what songs or artists would be on it?If my artwork had a soundtrack, it would be a mix of Lady Gaga, Arca, Charli XCX, hyperpop, and Mexican folk music. This blend reflects the intensity, drama, and emotional depth in my work, combining experimental sounds with powerful, dramatic lyrics to create a dynamic and engaging experience. What's the best thing you've found on the Free Shelf?FREE PHOTO FRAMES!!!
