Monotypes offer the artist the spontaneity of painting combined with the structure and deliberation of printmaking. The process is exciting for everyone from beginners to experienced artists. Course descriptionExperiment with both painterly and pochoir methods of monotype printmaking to make rich multi-media imagery. Painterly monotypes involve painting directly onto a smooth surface which is then printed. Pochoir involves applying ink to a stencil then layering on a printing plate. Results are surprising and unexpected and inspire more ideas to build upon. A variety of techniques and materials can be used: brushes, crayon, stencils, brayers and rollers, textured surfaces, and rich colorful inks. Experiment freely with concepts and materials while learning about basic color theory, mixing inks, composition and printing methods, including printing without a press, for students who want to print at home. Come away with a collection of inspiring monotypes. / Materials fee of $23 and facility fees of $23 included in tuition.
