Painting Studio: Landscapes for Ages 12-15 (In Person)

Learn the fundamentals of acrylic painting and apply those concepts to create unique landscape paintings. Open to ages 12 to 15.

Course description

Learn color-mixing and other techniques to explore subtle differences in the landscape, use value and contrast to show distance, and utilize design principles to create interesting compositions. Class will meet in the painting studio and outdoors (weather permitting) on MCAD's campus. Learn about landscape artists and see examples of the concepts in practice with a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. / Material fee of $5 included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 12 to 15. Students must meet the age requirement by August 1, 2026. Please review our complete Teen Policies as well as our General Policies prior to completing your registration.

Supplies for first class

  • pencil
  • sketchbook (any size)
  • one sheet (22”x30” or larger) Arches Cover White or Rives BFK paper
  • kneadable eraser
  • water cup
  • paper palettes
  • metal palette knife
  • acrylic paint brushes (various sizes, round and flat)
  • acrylic Paint Colors (60 ml tubes or larger)
    • Cadmium Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Phthalo Blue
    • Cadmium Yellow
    • Lemon Yellow
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Burnt Umber
    • Titanium White

Students should expect to spend up to approximately $100-$125 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
