Make and Keep Sketchbooks (In Person)

Discover how making and using handmade books can assist in cultivating a regular creative practice. Open to ages 16 and above.

Course description

This course covers the construction of two sketchbook/watercolor journals: a 24-page soft-cover book made from a single sheet of paper, and and a 192-page hard-cover book that is easy to replicate at home. Build a foundational knowledge of bookbinding materials, tools, and techniques, which includes constructing a cradle for punching book signatures to keep for future use. Class time includes working through a series of prompts to experiment with drawing, watercolors, and sketching within the space of the finished books. / A materials fee of $52 is included in the course tuition.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Required materials

Supplies for first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • preferred drawing materials (ex. markers, colored pencils, graphite, crayons, pastels, pens)
  • preferred watercolors and watercolor brush

Additional supplies needed throughout the course

  • one sheet of decorative paper for hardcover sketchbook

The material fee for this class covers the supplies to complete two sketchbooks. Students should expect to spend approximately $30–$40 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
