Lunchtime Workshop: Alcohol Markers Techniques (Online)

In this one-week course, learn the fundamentals in alcohol-based markers through a structured curriculum emphasizing technical mastery, blending techniques, and professional rendering. Open to students ages 16 and above.

Course description

Understand how to create smooth value transitions, build depth through light and contrast, and communicate surface qualities such as matte, reflective, and transparent materials.

Through live demonstration and guided studio practice, develop foundational skills in line weight, layering, and color application. The course progresses from value studies and basic forms to more complex rendering exercises, culminating in a fully resolved final illustration.

Designed for illustrators, designers, and creative professionals seeking to strengthen traditional hand-rendering skills, this course emphasizes transferable techniques applicable across disciplines.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This online class is synchronous. Students will meet together online on Monday–Friday from 12:00–1:00 p.m. CDT for lectures, demonstrations, class discussions, exercises, time to ask questions and share resources. The instructor will hold office hours for 30 minutes after each class meeting to answer questions and provide individualized feedback and guidance.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required.

Required Materials

Supplies for first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • black fine line markers
  • alcohol color markers
  • marker paper

Students should expect to spend approximately $30–$100 on supplies in addition to tuition.

Hardware
A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.
