Experimental Screenprinting (In Person)

This introduction to low-tech screenprinting covers a variety of ways to work without the use of screen filler, photo emulsion or a computer. Learn about stenciling techniques, monotype methods, and hand-drawn approaches to screenprinting.

Course description

Taking an analog approach encourages students to embrace imperfection while thinking differently about the ideation process. Learn simple and complex techniques and methods to create large quantities of artwork and quickly become comfortable with screenprinting process. With encouragement for experimentation, follow prompts to manipulate portions of an artwork completed in class to create a new work that expands the image making process. Please note that the use of digital printout negatives and photo emulsion screenprinting are not taught in this course. / Material fee of $23 and facility fee of $26 is included in tuition. Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This class meets in person on MCAD’s campus. This class has limited access to the Printshop. Students do not have access to the Printshop outside of class hours. Please review the Printshop guidelines in advance.

Required Materials

Supplies for the first class

  • pen, pencil or sharpie
  • X-acto knife or box cutter
  • packing tape
  • Printmaking paper larger than provided (optional)

Students should expect to spend approximately $25-$50 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity. An apron may be useful. Closed-toe shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back.
