Conceptual Editorial Illustration for Artists and Designers (Online)

Sharpen a marketable editorial skillset and hone the ability to create illustrations that show clear and clever ideas! Open to students ages 16 and above.

Course description

This course is for illustrators interested in learning how to create images for editorial clients. It is also meant for designer-illustrators exploring or working in newsrooms or similar environments where conceptual illustration is increasingly a daily part of designer tasks.

With a focus on conceptual visual problem solving, illustrators and designers are introduced to methods and techniques for both brainstorming and completing professional-level editorial visuals.

Students have the opportunity to explore a variety of techniques, from collage, to metaphor, to narrative yet conceptual solutions, with projects helping to build professional portfolios showcasing compelling, smart imagery. / Students will have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the course.

Class meeting details

This course will be a combination of a synchronous and asynchronous format. Students will meet together online on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m-8:00 p.m. CT using Zoom for lectures, demonstrations, class discussions, exercises, time to ask questions and share resources. Asynchronous activities may include readings, video demonstrations and tutorials, online discussions, projects, and critiques.

The instructor will have virtual office hours to answer questions and provide individualized feedback and guidance.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required. Students working digitally must have prior experience with their chosen software; the class offers no software instruction.

Required Materials

Supplies

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • color media of your choice
  • selection of drawing tools

Students are welcome to work digitally using software of their choice.

Software

  • Adobe Creative Cloud (provided by MCAD), if working digitally.
  • Other software recommendations; Procreate, Clip Studio Paint (not provided by MCAD).

Hardware

  • A computer with internet access, a camera or scanner to capture and upload work.
  • If working with Adobe Creative Cloud a computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud software.

This class uses Adobe Creative Cloud and Canvas, MCAD’s learning management system. Please see the link for more information.
