The Art of Weaving: An Introduction to Frame Loom Weaving (in person)

Participate in an accessible and cross-cultural practice that has recently been revived as a contemporary art form.

Course description

Learn about weft faced handwoven textiles through using inexpensive tools and simple weaving techniques. Prepare and warp the frame loom, discover fundamental weaving and tapestry practices, and experiment with textile finishing techniques. Work alongside an experienced artist and tapestry weaver in a collaborative learning environment. Discuss fiber choices along with the preparation and use of the cartoon for pictorial design, fiber color mixing and the place of tapestry in historical and contemporary art and design. / A $14 materials fee is included in the tuition.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Required supplies

Supplies needed for first class

  • Graphite pencil
  • Eraser
  • 12” ruler or 3’ sewing tape
  • Sharp scissors
  • 1 skein or ball of yarn for sharing
  • Cloth or plastic bag for storing and carrying yarn
  • 14" Beka Frame Loom kit that includes leash stick, shuttle and needle. Please order this prior to class in order to have if for our second class.

Additional supplies will be discussed at the first class.

Students should expect to spend approximately $50-$75 on supplies in addition to tuition.
