The Art of Filmmaking: Sequence and Editing (In Partnership with CalArts)

Course description

The sequencing of images gives films their cinematic form. Editing is essential to establish the rhythm, pacing, and experience of a film for the viewer. The editing may be subtle and hardly visible or it can be forcefully present. In this course, you will be introduced to different approaches to editing that include montage theory, continuity editing, and slow cinema.

You will produce short videos based on prompts designed to explore editing concepts and techniques. To complete the assignments a video camera is recommended but a smartphone can be used. Access to, and a working knowledge of editing software such as Adobe Premiere is required. In addition to completing assignments, students will have the option to participate in live, instructor-led discussions and critiques. This supplemental experience allows students to engage with one another as they explore the topics of the course and share feedback. / There is an option to purchase a 12 month Adobe Creative Cloud subscription through CalArts for $250.

Class meeting details

This online course is asynchronous, meaning that there are no set class meeting times. Instead, the course is project-based, with 2 to 3 deadlines per week, and students can choose a time and place that works best for them to complete the work. Course activities may include readings; video demonstrations and tutorials; online discussions; projects; and critiques.

Prerequisites

Working knowledge of editing software such as Adobe Premiere is required.

Class resources

This class uses Canvas, CalArts Learning Management System. The Canvas platform provides an instructor-led learning experience. These class sizes are small to facilitate discussion and engagement with your instructor and other students. You have access to recorded content from CalArts instructors and may complete the course work at your own pace with set deadlines. The instructor is available in live sessions to answer your questions and provide individualized feedback on assignments.

Grades and Grading
CalArts Extended Studies Adult Learning courses utilize the following non-credit grading scheme: CRD (Credit): Passing satisfactorily. NCR (No Credit): No credit earned toward degree or certificate requirements. W (Withdrawn): Grade assigned by the Registrar’s Office to indicate withdrawal from course after the end of the standard add/drop period.
