Acrylic Painting Basics (In Person)

Master the fundamentals of painting with acrylics in a welcoming, engaging studio environment. Open to students ages 16 and above.

Class meeting details

This course covers the essentials of the technical application of using acrylic paint, as well as how to harness color theory and composition to create expressive paintings. Learn this medium through a blend of live demonstrations and hands-on studio time. Engage in group critiques and develop the ability to discuss art using common terminology. / Materials fee of $9 is included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Required Materials

Supplies for the first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • five canvas boards;
    • three 8 x 10”
    • two 9 x 12”
  • one 9 x 12” pad of disposable palette
  • one palette knife, ¾ x 2 ⅛”
  • various acrylic paint brushes (various sizes, round and flat)
  • acrylic paint, 2 oz:
    • alizarin crimson
    • burnt sienna
    • burnt umber
    • cadmium red
    • cadmium yellow
    • phthalo blue
    • titanium white
    • ultramarine blue
    • yellow ochre
  • eraser
  • container for water
  • cloth rags or paper towels

Students should expect to spend approximately $130 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothing appropriate for messy creativity. An apron or smock may be useful.

Class savings

Register on or before May 11 and save $25.
Register for more than one class at a time and receive $25 off each additional class (same-day registrations only).
