BIO

Gene Bird is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blurs the boundaries between photography, video, painting, and sculpture. His practice is driven by a fascination with the unseen—ideas, emotions, and histories that exist beneath the surface of everyday life. Rather than documenting reality, Bird constructs dreamlike environments where memory, identity, and myth intertwine. His work resists linear storytelling, instead creating open-ended visual experiences that invite viewers to engage with shifting meanings and layered interpretations. Through carefully curated compositions and experimental arrangements, he explores how objects, images, and forms can evoke both personal and collective narratives.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY MENTORSHIP

My approach to mentorship centers on dialogue, adaptability, and supporting each student’s evolving goals. I value the one-on-one structure as a space for rigorous but constructive conversation—where ideas, process, and research can be challenged and clarified in ways that feel relevant to the student’s individual practice. Drawing from my multidisciplinary background, I aim to offer both conceptual and practical guidance, helping students navigate material decisions, develop their studio work, and think critically about their position within a broader artistic and professional context. I see mentorship as a collaborative process shaped by the student’s direction, where my role is to provide perspective, honest feedback, and sustained engagement in support of their growth.
