Introduction to Illustration (online)

This course introduces students to methods, techniques, and formal critique and analysis to effectively communicate visually through illustration.

Discuss the development of ideation and creative visual solutions by establishing a solid sketch process while also completing finished illustration work. The instructor leads demos in a variety of media techniques, such as using tools for inking, wet media, pastel, acrylic, and entry-level digital skills, such as scanning and using Photoshop for process work. The class consists of traditional media assignments as well as the option to work digitally, traditionally, or a combination of both for certain assignments. A wide range of assignments are given to explore the areas of conceptual work, narrative, surface design, posters, and explorative work. Integrated into the class are lectures on professional topics such as the study of the current illustration field, how to promote your work, build a strong portfolio, and other relevant industry topics. / Students will have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the class. / No class June 11.

Class meeting details

This online course is synchronous, meaning students meet weekly online for class meetings via Google Meet. Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, discussions, exercises, critiques, and time to ask questions and share resources.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing and painting experience are helpful, but not required. Previous experience with Adobe Photoshop is helpful but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for everyone

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • drawing tools - pencils, and erasers OR a digital pen/tablet

For those working with traditional materials

  • sketchbook (no smaller than 8x10)
  • tracing paper pad or roll
  • art surfaces - we will discuss art material surface options at the first class
  • color media - a basic set of either watercolor, acrylic, gouache, or chalk pastel
  • black and white media - we will discuss black and white media options at the first class

No supplies are needed on the first day of class but will be needed for the homework due the next class. Supplies will cost approximately $35 in addition to tuition, depending on what options students choose.

Hardware
A computer capable of running the Adobe Creative Cloud software with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings. A computer, tablet, scanner or smartphone to capture and upload work.

This class uses Adobe Creative Cloud and Canvas, MCAD’s learning management system. Please see links for more information.
