Describe the work you submitted for merits.

I submitted some art from my Foundation classes, including Drawing 1 and 2, and Foundation 2D and 3D. It includes monotoned pieces, graphite, vibrant colors, skulls, and still life studies.

What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make?

In my artistic practice, I'm now experimenting with combining both pop art/colors and grittiness. Since moving to Minneapolis, I've noticed how much I miss Chicago's architecture and overall vibe. In my work, I want to incorporate this "vibe" with vibrant colors and intricate ink work. I have also developed a love for metal, so I hope to find a way to incorporate steel and copper into my work.

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

I decided to come to MCAD because of its diverse community, its financial aid offer, and all that MCAD offered academic-wise. It was one of the closest art school to my home state, besides SAIC and Columbia, that offered 2D Animation and Comic Art.

Favorite thing about college life (so far)?

I would have to say the friends I have made. Since coming here, I have been inspired daily by my peers, teachers, and their artwork. This community is small, but it is welcoming. Being surrounded by like-minded artists is... an incredible experience.

What's the best thing you've got from MCAD's free shelf?

MCAD doesn't have a free shelf this year, so I haven't picked up anything. However, I got some free cardboard from my 3D teacher, so I guess that counts?

Anything you're obsessed with at the moment?

I'm currently obsessed with Arctic Monkeys, especially their Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino albums. I've also been fascinated by skulls. I noticed I include skulls in my work often, and honestly, I enjoy drawing the skeletal form.

What inspires you?

Nature and overgrowth, worn down homes and side walks, vintage aesthetics, any ink art work, books, different weather patterns, music, old abandoned buildings, corn fields, and mythology.

Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it!

One of my favorite pieces is a steampunk plague doctor I did with Indian ink. It was a recreation of an old piece. I tried to include as many details as I could, along with practicing cross hatching and pointillism. I kept it black and white with the exception of red ink for its eyes. I have always been a fan of the steampunk genre, and it's something I would like to create more work for.
