The Travel Sketchbook: Drawing on Location (in person)

Learn the techniques to capture the people, environment, architecture, and nuances of the visual landscape. Explore basic drawing skills, contour and gesture drawing, composition, perspective (and how to skew it), as well as sketching in color. This class meets outdoors at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden adjacent to the Walker Art Center. / Facility fee of $3 included in course tuition. / This class has a 30 minute lunch break.

Please note that this course meets outside and may require climbing stairs or a steep hill. If you need accommodations (i.e. are unable to navigate stairs or a steep hill) please contact our office.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class meeting

• sketchbook (the largest size you would travel with)
• pencils (suggested sizes: HB, 2B, 4B)
• pencil sharpener
• drawing pen(s) with waterproof ink (suggested sizes #3, #5, recommended Copic Multiliner pens)
• watercolors (travel sets of dry watercolors (children's sets are fine) or watercolor pencils/crayons
• 1 or more small paint brushes
• small water container

Students should expect to spend approximately $20 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Wear clothes appropriate to outdoor weather, including hats, sunscreen, and mosquito repellant.
