Play, Redefine, and Explore: Typography as Art Form (in person) | Minneapolis College of Art and Design

Play, Redefine, and Explore: Typography as Art Form (in person)

Learn the anatomy of typography and the role it plays in the history of graphic design and art movements, particularly English and Chinese typography and the Dada art movement.

Begin the course with a brief international history of graphic design with a focus on typography. Gain an understanding of the difference between traditional, contemporary and experimental typography. Understand typography design principles and elements (layout, proportion, color, scale, and hierarchy) and apply personal experiences and skill sets to create and express thoughts and voices through typography in composition. Learn through case studies of global graphic designers and typographers who work with experimental typography and mixed media exploration in both analog to digital techniques. Utilize different mediums and techniques inspired by the Dada art movements, such as collage or cut-up, ink, brush, and digital manipulation to open ways to experiment and explore playful typography as an art form with unique personal expression and voices. The instructor encourages students to think outside of the box and find innovative ways of making typography with playfulness. / Students will have access to the Adobe Creative Suite throughout the course.
