Introduction to Painting (Section 1) (in person)

This class provides a fun and exciting path to understanding the basic concepts, techniques, and materials used in contemporary acrylic painting.

Students are introduced to the formal elements of painting, such as composition, measuring, and color theory. In addition to studio work, students learn about various painting styles and histories through short lectures and a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Students are introduced to terms commonly used to discuss art and experience a group critique. / Material fee of $5 included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 12-15. MCAD strictly adheres to these age guidelines and is unable to allow exceptions. Please review our complete Teen Policies as well as our General Policies prior to completing your registration.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

  • Pen or pencil
  • Sketchbook
  • 2 large sheets (22”x30” or larger) Arches Cover White and/or Rives BFK paper
  • 2B graphite pencil
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Water cup
  • Paper palettes
  • Palette knife
  • Acrylic paint brushes (various sizes, round and flat)
  • Acrylic Paint Colors (at least 60 mL each):
    • Cadmium Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Phthalo Blue
    • Cadmium Yellow
    • Lemon Yellow
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Burnt Umber
    • Titanium White

Students should anticipate an additional cost of roughly $100 in total for materials (not included in tuition).
