Hand Lettering Workshop (in person) | Minneapolis College of Art and Design

Hand Lettering Workshop (in person)

In this introductory workshop learn the basics of creating illustrated letterforms and simple but effective typographic composition.

Use materials such as pencil, ink, nibs, watercolor, and more to experiment with shape, color, and composition to start thinking of letters as illustrative shapes. Walk away from the class with knowledge of proper posture and technique to pull straight vs. curvy lines, a deeper understanding of how different types of materials produce different qualities of line, and what situation calls for specific materials. Learn basic typographic terminology and how to manipulate pieces of type to suit compositional needs as well as be able to map out a composition and work a piece from sketch to final product. Class sessions are composed of group demonstrations covering basic letter anatomy, stylistic exploration, composition, techniques, and tools. There is structured time for students to ask questions, receive feedback and one-on-one meetings.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.
