2023 Merit Scholarship Recipient: A. Simone

Describe the work you submitted for merits.

I submitted work that speaks to the versatility of my craft as well as the personal and professional interests I have as an illustrator. Because I wanted to show a wide range of work, I included a historical non-fiction zine, several musician posters, a travel poster, physical products, conceptual product design, and a character design project.

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

I was drawn to the Twin Cities because of its appreciation for the arts. The fact that it also had an art school was just an extra bonus!

What are your plans for your senior year? And beyond?

I plan on experimenting and getting out of my comfort zone during my senior year. Post graduation, I want my hands involved in everything. I have big, big ideas for a book and more product and surface design projects.

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by Black personhood, the paranormal, childhood nostalgia, and all things kitsch, camp, and vintage.

Anything you're obsessed with at the moment?

I'm currently obsessed with pre-code films from the early '30s and finding lost Black films.

Do I have a favorite color?

Yes, it's pink!
