Introduction to Printmaking (In Person)

Course description

Become familiar with screenprinting, monoprinting, relief printing, and intaglio techniques and gain the skills needed to work safely and successfully in MCAD’s printshop. Learn basic color theory, color mixing, composition and printing methods. Class activities include demos, discussion, and supervised work time. This course sets beginner students and artists up to take more advanced printmaking courses MCAD offers. / Students have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the course. / Please review the Printshop Facility Fees Supply List for more information. / A materials fee of $49 and a facilities fee of $152 is included in the course tuition.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This course meets in person on MCAD's campus. This class has limited access to the Printshop. Students do not have access to the Printshop outside of class hours. Please review the Printshop guidelines in advance.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required. Students working from digital files must have prior experience with Adobe Photoshop; the class offers no software instruction.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

• pen or pencil
• notebook or sketchbook

Optional supplies

• additional linoleum blocks
• additional copper plates
• Speedball lino cutter if working outside of class
• a drypoint needle if working outside of class
• additional paper

The material fee for this class covers the supplies to complete one project with each technique. Optional supplies will be discussed at the first class meeting.

Students should expect to spend approximately $25-$75 on optional supplies in addition to tuition. The amount will depend on the scope of the students' projects and what supplies the students currently have.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity. An apron may be useful. Closed-toe shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back.

Class savings

Register on or before August 10 and save $25.
