Fabricated Metal Sculpture (In Person)

Learn the basics of metalworking and welding by transforming ideas, drawings, and designs into three dimensional metal sculptures.

Course description

Explore foundational skills such as MIG welding and various cutting, bending, and grinding techniques to produce functional and aesthetic works of art. Engage in demonstrations and guided work time to develop the skills to create a final student-driven project. / Students are required to follow the 3D shop safety and procedural guidelines, shared on the first day. / A materials fee of $29 and a facilities fee of $115 is included in the course tuition.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This course meets in person on MCAD's campus. This class has limited access to the 3D shop. This class meets on Saturdays from 9:00-12:00 PM. Students have open studio work time on Tuesday and Thursday 6:00-9:00 PM, September 15- November 12. Students do not have access to the 3D shop outside of these hours.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • safety glasses
  • Sharpie
  • fire-rated work gloves
  • tape measure

Additional Supplies needed throughout the course

  • steel
  • drill bits for metal
  • hammer
  • wire cutter or needle nose pliers
  • grinding disks
  • paint or materials for finishing

Additional supplies will be discussed during the first class meeting. Students should expect to spend approximately $200-$250 on supplies in addition to tuition, depending on projects.

What to wear
Close-toed shoes, long pants, all natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool) are required.
