April 30, 2025 Image She/HerJunior, Fine Arts, Drawing and PaintingFine Arts Merit ScholarshipMarion, IA How/why did you choose your major?I chose to major in fine arts drawing and painting because I knew this field would challenge me and enhance my strengths as an artist.Describe the work you submitted for merits. The works I submitted to merits revolve heavily around my life back in Iowa and all the memories I have associated with my home and family life. A repeating motif you see often in my work is the frequent appearance of birds. The birds in my work help me illustrate the deeper nuances and feelings I experience in the world around me. They are a conduit of change and a familiar face that helps me connect with the world when my words fall short. Why did you decide to come to MCAD?I was pulled to come to MCAD because it was the right fit. In my journey here, I toured eight different colleges and Art institutions across the Midwest, and I found that it wasn't until I showed up at the MCAD campus by complete accident that I finally found the right college. I am from a small town in IA, so there was something about this small, close-knit campus that invited me in, and I can't say I have regretted my decision since. What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make?In the future, I see myself working on more extensive projects, whether in size or time commitment. I am finally getting my footing in the work I am excited to create, and I am grateful for the opportunity to push my capabilities into more self-led work. Explore more about Rebeckah Regennitter
